Synthetic Data
What is Synthetic Data?
Training data that is artificially generated rather than collected from real-world sources. Synthetic data is used to augment training sets, protect privacy, address class imbalance, or generate rare-case examples. It is increasingly used to train AI models where real data is scarce, expensive, or sensitive.
Example in practice
A healthcare AI company that cannot use real patient records for privacy reasons might generate synthetic patient records with realistic statistical properties — creating a training dataset that preserves patterns without exposing actual individuals.
