Model collapse

What is Model collapse?

A theoretical failure mode where AI models trained on AI-generated content progressively degrade in quality and diversity over successive generations. A growing concern as AI-generated text and images flood the training corpora used for future models.

Example in practice

A content team that uses AI-generated articles as training examples for their custom model could inadvertently accelerate model collapse — each generation amplifying the same stylistic patterns and narrowing output diversity.
