What is Alignment?
The challenge of ensuring AI systems behave in accordance with human values and intentions. Misalignment occurs when an AI optimises for a proxy goal in unintended ways — a central concern in AI safety research.
Example in practice
A product team discovering that their AI recommendation engine maximises click-through at the cost of user satisfaction is observing a mild form of misalignment between the proxy metric and the intended goal.
